Damned if we do, damned if we don’t.

While I agree that more borrowing in an attempt to kick-start the national economy is unlikely to end well, the alternative is even scarier. Simply allowing everything to crash would cause the Great Depression to look like good times.

The only good that I can see coming out of the proposed stimulus plans are the desperately needed upgrades to the national infrastructure. Plus if the wallet is opened to researchers and developers of renewable alternatives to energy, there is an opportunity to take the lead in those technologies.

Sadly, I fear that we are likely too late anyway. The well is not bottomless, and the problem too great, and getting larger with every passing day. Government inaction has postponed solutions for so long it may well be impossible to stop the death spiral.

There will come a time when the treasury won’t be able to raise any more money. As any over limit credit card holder will tell you, sooner or later the card company says “No more!”
