Proposition 8

image Ellen Degeneres has called out prop8 in California. In a recent blog entry she asked anyone in California to vote "NO" to prop8. If you aren’t familiar with the article in question it is a vote to define marriage in the state of California. The idea behind the proposition is to nullify same-sex marriages. Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Ellen at the California Supreme Court before the whole process is over. If you  feel strongly about this issue and live in California then you need to vote, either for or against.

This issue is bigger than Ellen or California. Same-sex marriage is an issue this country will have to deal with on a national scale. I think in time we will see a constitutional amendment for same-sex marriage. If I lived there I’d vote with Ellen, in the meantime I thought you might want to see the proposed amendment.

Proposition Eight

IMIT ON MARRIAGE. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.
Amends the California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: The measure would have no fiscal effect on state or local governments. This is because there would be no change to the manner in which marriages are currently recognized by the state.

ELIMINATES RIGHT OF SAME-SEX COUPLES TO MARRY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.
Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. Provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. Fiscal Impact: Over next few years, potential revenue loss, mainly sales taxes, totaling in the several tens of millions of dollars, to state and local governments. In the long run, likely little fiscal impact on state and local governments.

Gays being married does not affect the price of gas, my mortgage, my job stability, the economy. As society, we must understand what civil liberties mean from a core value and embrace the term and its meaning. Some may, at some point in time, label Christians as zealots and cultists and deem them dangerous because they interfere on a large scale as a religious organization with our politics in this country…when we have a clear separation of church and state and we understand why….

Let gay people be as miserable as us married straight people! ;-)

In all seriousness, I have a question - why is this an issue? No, really - why is this an issue?

At the end of the day, marriage is a legal contract between two consenting adults. Why should anyone care if they’re different ethnicities or the same gender? How does Ellen being married impact my marriage?

But I must disagree with you on one point - I don’t think (and pray there won’t be) a constitutional ammendment regarding gay marriage. It should be left as a state issue, as the framers (and authors of the 10th Ammendment) wanted.

Thanks for your viewpoint. Now that I think about it the Prohibition Amendment wasn’t exactly a great idea either. And no I’m not being sarcastic.

I guess deep down I agree social issues are best left out. I think it is still a national issue, but you may be right in that regard.
